So let us look at the important useful and confusing words from the Hindu editorial dated 12 May 2021. First editorial is related to On Indian coronavirus variant.

The Hindu Vocabulary – 12 May 2021

1. afflict – If a problem or illness afflicts a person or thing, they suffer from it

Hindu Usage: In March nearly 20% of the cases out of Maharashtra, which has consistently been among the most afflicted States, were being linked to the variant.

2. prevalence – the fact that something is very common or happens often

Hindu Usage: Based on the prevalence, some variants may go on to become the dominant strain in a region or multiple geographies.

3. inoculate – to give a person or animal a vaccine

Hindu Usage: Along with monitoring reinfections and cases of breakthrough infections (testing positive after being double inoculated), flagging variants must be seen as a crucial health response.

4. ravage – to cause great damage to something

Hindu Usage: The second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic has not only ravaged India but has also begun to affect its landlocked neighbour Nepal.

5. reel – If you reel, or your mind or brain reels, you feel very confused or shocked

Hindu Usage: Citizens reeling under oxygen shortages, spikes in the daily case load, and fatalities. 

6. cudgels – a short, heavy stick used for hitting people

Hindu Usage: Mr. Nepal had taken up the cudgels against Mr. Oli in the unified NCP along with Mr. Dahal, and had opposed Mr. Oli’s decision to dissolve Parliament — a move which was also struck down by the Supreme Court.

7. intriguing – very interesting because of being unusual or mysterious

Hindu Usage: Even more intriguing was the vertical split in another Opposition party, the Janata Samajwadi Party-Nepal (JSP) — the 15-member Baburam Bhattarai-Upendra Yadav faction voted against Mr. Oli.

8. steadfastly – strongly and without stopping

Hindu Usage: Something that Mr. Oli had steadfastly opposed — the other faction is inclined to support Mr. Oli in order to wrest concessions for the Madhesis.

9. onslaught  – a very powerful attack

Hindu Usage: At least now, when Nepal faces the onslaught of the novel coronavirus, the polity must rise to the occasion and work towards an alternative stable regime.
