The Hindu Vocabulary – 11 May 2021

Hi friends, in this post we are sharing with you the Hindu Vocabulary – 11 May 2021 based on the editorials published in The Hindu Newspaper dated 11 May 2021. Everyday, The Hindu covers two editorials on the aspects of National/International events of importance and covers a plethora of useful words. This will be not only be useful in improving your vocabulary, but also for competitive examinations.

So let us look at the important useful and confusing words from the Hindu editorial dated 11 May 2021. First editorial is related to production of COVID-19 vaccine

The Hindu Vocabulary – 11 May 2021

  1. skirmish – an episode of irregular or unpremeditated fighting

Hindu Usage: Vaccine skirmishes: On production of COVID-19 vaccine

2. erstwhile – previous

Hindu Usage: Months before it was tabled, during the 2020 U.S. presidential election, erstwhile candidate Joe Biden vowed that should he win, he would “absolutely positively” commit to sharing vaccine technology with countries that needed it.

3. vow – a solemn promise

Hindu Usage: See Sl.2 above.

4. chasm – a profound difference between people, viewpoints, feelings, etc.

Hindu Usage: Perhaps anticipating the deep chasm of inequality in vaccine access.

5. salvo – a sudden, vigorous, or aggressive act or series of acts.

Hindu Usage: The first pushback salvo came from Germany which said that it would create “severe complications” for the production of vaccines, echoing the view of major pharma corporations. 

6. hostile – not agreeing with something

Hindu Usage: While French President Emmanuel Macron had appeared relatively less hostile to considering the proposal earlier, he lashed out at the “Anglo-Saxons” for impeding vaccine availability globally by blocking the export of ingredients.

7. know-how – practical knowledge and ability

Hindu Usage: First, the grant of a waiver would have to be accompanied by a “tech transfer” that provides generic pharmaceutical manufacturers with the requisite trained personnel, raw materials and hi-tech equipment and production know-how

8. efficacy – the ability, especially of a medicine or a method of achieving something, to produce the intended result

Hindu Usage: Second, there must be a scientifically convincing answer to the question of how any vaccine then produced by these generic manufacturers — in all likelihood, years from now — would pass the tests of safety, immunogenicity and protective efficacy

9. persuade – to make someone do or believe something by giving them a good reason to do it or by talking to that person and making them believe it

Hindu Usage: Indeed, there is speculation that the intention behind Mr. Biden’s waiver proclamation might be in favour of the last outcome, essentially a tactic to persuade pharmaceutical companies to accept less painful measures including sharing some of their technology willingly.

10. culmination – the point at which an event or series of events ends, having developed until it reaches this point

Hindu Usage: The ongoing violence in Jerusalem is a culmination of the tensions building up since the start of Ramzan in mid-April.

11. escalate – to become or make something become greater or more serious

Hindu Usage: Last week, close to a scheduled Israeli Supreme Court hearing on the eviction of Palestinian families in an Arab neighbourhood of Jerusalem, tensions escalated.

12. volatile  – likely to change suddenly and unexpectedly, especially by getting worse

Hindu Usage: Despite the volatile situation, the Israeli authorities gave permission to the annual Jerusalem Day Flag March.

13. the status quo – the present situation

Hindu Usage: Israel’s tactic till now has been to hold on to the status quo through force.

14. carte blanche – complete freedom to do something

Hindu Usage: With carte blanche from the Trump administration, Israel expanded its settlements and extended repression of the Palestinians in the occupied territories. 

15. repression – the use of force or violence to control a group of people

Hindu Usage: See Sl.14 above

16. mend your ways – to begin to improve your behaviour after you have been behaving badly

Hindu Usage: Israel’s actions have triggered condemnations from across the world, but it is unlikely to mend its ways.
